A few centuries ago, Reunion Island was named Bourbon Island, after an important dynasty that ruled France. After Mexico, it was in the Indian Ocean that vanilla was cultivated. And it is more precisely on Reunion Island, thanks to a slave who understood the principle of pollination of the flowers of the vanilla tree, this species of orchid, that vanilla was first cultivated. When it came to giving a name to this vanilla, Bourbon was the name that imposed itself. Bourbon vanilla is only produced in the Indian Ocean, and more precisely in the following territories: Madagascar, Comoros, Reunion, Seychelles and Mauritius.
My Bourbon vanilla is a little treasure that I found in the Sava region, in the north-east of the island of Madagascar. Here, all the conditions are there to cultivate and shape a high quality product. An adapted climate, rich soil, low altitude, passionate producers who perfectly master their art, difficult to find better. The Bourbon Gold vanilla 16-17 cm of Madagascar that I propose to you is the fruit of a long refining process. It has been stored for several months in wooden trunks and today offers a humidity level of 25-30%.
