What is Himalayan salt?

A few million years ago, the Himalayan regions were oceans. With the movement of tectonic plates, the sea eventually disappeared and mountain ranges were formed. The Himalayas are the result of the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. As the seas receded, salt deposits rose to the surface. As a result, the Khewra salt mine was naturally created, and pink Himalayan salt is a rock salt. It is found precisely in the Kashmir region of Pakistan's Punjab. It is said that it was when Alexander the Great came with his troops in the 4th century BC that Himalayan salt was discovered. As his horses licked the rocks, the soldiers were intrigued and did the same. They then discovered the salty taste of the rocks. However, it wasn' t until the 16th century that Himalayan pink salt was exploited. In the 19th century, when the British took control of the region, they created a simplified access to the mine to market this salt. Hundreds of tons of this high-quality condiment are extracted by hand from the rock every year. Today, pink Himalayan salt has become a must-have condiment. Found at the bottom of the Khewra mines, this salt is unaffected by pollution, which explains its incomparable quality. Unrefined, it's a raw product. One might imagine that its color is due to specific treatments or additives. But this is not the case. Himalayan salt is naturally pink.

Pink Himalayan salt is a veritable diamond of salt from Kashmir, whose origins date back over 700 million years. Also known as Kashmir pink salt, it is extracted from the Khewra mine in the far east of Pakistan, on the edge of the Himalayas. This mine is now the world's largest rock salt mine, extracting some 350,000 tonnes of salt every year. Pink salt is extracted from depths of 400 to 600 meters and is free from pollution, making it the purest salt in the world.

Himalayan pink salt is highly prized in the kitchen for its delicate, fine taste, which goes perfectly with meats and vegetables. Its crunchiness makes it an excellent alternative to fleur de sel, for example. It is also widely used in aromatherapy, notably in the preparation of bath salts.

Pink Kashmir salt is rich in trace elements, iron and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc and manganese, making it a superior quality salt. Its purity is well-founded, as the mines from which it is extracted are located deep underground and are not subject to man-made pollution. What's more, it is not refined, unlike sea salts, which today undergo numerous chemical processes to rid them of the increasing pollution of the oceans.

Finally, pink Himalayan salt is widely used for its health benefits. It helps combat water retention thanks to its high potassium content, regulates blood pressure and contributes to the proper functioning of the nervous system and thyroid gland. Its rich mineral content also makes it an ally for bone and tooth health.

In short, Himalayan pink salt is a high-quality, pure, mineral-rich salt, ideal for cooking and beneficial to health. So go ahead, treat yourself to the best salt in the world by choosing Himalayan pink salt!

What does Himalayan salt taste like?

Himalayan salt naturally has an iodized taste reminiscent of traditional salt. However, it is finer than the salt we are used to consuming, and in terms of quality, it is closer to fleur de sel, which also comes in the form of thicker crystals than fine salt.

Harvesting Himalayan salt

The Khewra mines in Pakistan's Punjab region have been developed over the centuries to provide safe access to the Himalayan treasure trove of pink salt. Unlike sea salt, which is harvested from marshes, pink salt is extracted from mines. This very pure fossil salt is not collected by just anyone. A hereditary title is required to go into the mine and extract the salt. The trade is passed down from father to son. Miners receive medical benefits, as well as help with housing and educating their children. The salt is extracted by hand. 40 km of tunnels have been dug. You can visit the salt mines, where you'll find vendors selling products made from pink Himalayan salt, salt for consumption, and reproductions of monuments in salt sculptures. There's even an asthma clinic in the Khewra salt mine.

How can Himalayan salt be used in cooking?

Like fleur de sel, Himalayan pink salt has a higher salting power than fine salt. It should therefore be used sparingly. Unlike fine or coarse salt, pink salt is not recommended for salting the water in your dishes. It's best used at the table to add salt to meat, fish, salads, etc. As a pure salt, it's a perfect alternative to fine salts, which are sometimes polluted and cleaned with chemicals. Its crunchy crystals add a touch of pep to your meals. You can, however, choose to use a salt mill to make a finer salt. Surprise your guests with a magnificent Himalayan pink salt

Himalayan pink salt is also highly appreciated for its various virtues.

We recommend keeping your Himalayan pink salt away from light, preferably in a cool, dry place.
