  • What is oregano?

Oregano is a plant of the Lamiaceae family to which rosemary, savory, thyme or basil also belong. The one that is also called wild marjoram or perennial marjoram is cultivated in Europe and the Middle East, I propose to you today an oregano from Turkey. It has a favourable climate in this country to fully develop all its flavours. Oregano has always been an important plant, but not always for its taste qualities. While the Egyptians and Indians considered it a sacred plant, the Greeks and Romans were seduced by its aphrodisiac virtues. As early as antiquity, infusions of oregano were concocted to be healthy. Today, oregano is particularly known for its presence in the famous herbs of Provence alongside rosemary, basil and tarragon.

    What does oregano taste like?

Oregano has an intense, spicy, slightly bitter taste with hints of pepper.

    Harvesting Oregano in Plantations

Oregano is a small edible plant whose leaf is used as an herb, dried and ground. It is also possible to eat its leaves. It likes the sun and calcareous and sandy soils, it adapts to drained to dry soils. This plant can reach 30 to 80 cm in height, it is hardy and withstands negative temperatures down to -15°. Turkey offers a favourable climate for this plant to grow in the best conditions.

How to use oregano in cooking?

In cooking, when we talk about oregano, we immediately think of Italian cuisine. Oregano is the star of pizzas; it brings the strength that makes all the difference. On a pizza made with homemade tomato sauce, sundried tomatoes, Parma ham and Parmesan cheese, oregano brings that unmistakable vegetable note. Of course, when we talk about Italian cuisine, how can we not talk about pasta? Here again, oregano has its place. Pasta Bolognese, cannelloni, ravioli, lasagne, oregano will enhance your recipes. In a marinade, this herb is also a good choice. With olive oil and basil, marinate meat or prawns and then pass them on the plancha. On the barbecue or the plancha, make tomatoes à la provençale, it will be delicious. I also advise you to integrate oregano in a moussaka to bring it once again, this vegetal and intense side. Of course, oregano also goes perfectly with a fish dish, whether you eat it in a casserole, in a frying pan, in the oven, in a papillote, etc. Good to know: with a minimum cooking time of 15 minutes, oregano reveals all its aromas. From the aperitif, oregano will become the star of your recipes. Imagine presenting your guests with a small salted muffin with chorizo, tomato, parmesan and oregano. You'll cause a sensation.

    The Health Benefits of Oregano

Oregano, like many herbs, has health benefits. In infusion, in decoction in poultice, this plant takes all forms to relieve you. Oregano is known for its ability to fight pain. It also has antiseptic virtues. It acts effectively on digestion. As an infusion after a meal, it is highly recommended. This herb is also antibacterial and antiparasitic, it will know how to fight against winter ailments.

    The conservation of oregano

Delivered in an airtight resealable bag, my dried Turkish oregano is best stored in a place away from light and humidity.
