  • What is Java Long Pepper?

    Java long pepper is the fruit of Piper Longum, a vine pepper from India. It belongs to the cashew nut family.

    Today, it grows in the wild on the island of Java in Indonesia and in the Himalayas.

    Java long pepper is the fruit of Piper Longum, a vine with a length of about one meter.

    The origins of Java long pepper

    Java long pepper originates from the Moluccan archipelago in eastern Indonesia.

    It is one of the first spices to have been imported into Europe. Moreover, the Indian name "Pippali" is at the origin of the words "Pepper" and "Pepper".

    Still unknown, despite its predominant age over other varieties of pepper, Indonesian long pepper is a rare pepper with traces in Ayurveda.

    The import of long Java pepper ceased when the Roman Empire collapsed. It was not until the end of the 19th century and the resumption of the spice trade that it regained its former success.

    Other uses

    Java long pepper has the same properties as peppers from Piper Longum. It is very popular in Ayurveda, especially for its ability to increase the Agni which symbolizes digestion and metabolism.

    How to use Java long pepper in cooking?

    Indonesian Long Pepper has a very original aromatic palette, less bitter and even sweeter than other peppers from Asia.

    Java long pepper is consumed whole in brine or canned, grated and crushed. It is extremely complicated to grind it.

    The starter: Papillote of goat cheese and courgette

    A light and tasty cheese starter! Double your cling film. Clean and make fine courgette spaghetti. Slice an onion and caramelize it. Place your courgette spaghetti in your papillote and a little onion. Arrange a few pieces of fresh goat cheese. Salt and grate Java long pepper. Add a little olive oil and a few crushed and roasted hazelnuts. Bake at 180° C. A delight!

    The dish: Autumn pumpkin and chestnut soup

    A comforting soup! Clean your pumpkin and cut it into cubes. Cut your chestnuts into slices and grill them over high heat, then cut them into small pieces. Cut a large onion. Brown your pumpkin cubes in oil. Add the onion. Cover with water and cook for 30 minutes. Salt. Mix your soup. Serve the soup in hot bowls. Add a little crushed Java long pepper and sprinkle with chestnuts.

    Dessert: Compote with apples of character

    Need an original compote for your pies or cakes? Add a little Java pepper to homemade compote. Spread it on your puff pastry with thin slices of apples and crushed almonds.

    How to store Java long pepper?

    Like all peppers, long pepper can be stored in a dry and dark place. Java long pepper is a hard pepper. Make sure it does not soften by keeping it away from any source of moisture.
